Youth

I was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin , on the banks of the Mississippi. The winters are long and cold. When I was 12 years old, my family moved further north to Wausau, Wisconsin, where the winters were even longer and colder.

I stayed in Wisconsin only as I had to. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin--Madison in English Literature, I went as far from there as I could.

Travel

Immediately after college, I decided to travel the world and soon found myself teaching English as a Second Language in Taipei, Taiwan. I spend almost 7 years living in Taiwan, and that time served as my introduction to publishing. During my time in Asia, I gained experience as a freelance writer, editor, and production manager. Most of my work was with business-to-business magazines in the computer industry. It was interesting to travel the region and interview leaders in the field; many of the innovations I reported on almost 20 years ago are just now entering the U.S. market.

While I spent most of my time abroad in Taiwan, I still managed to make it around the world. The countries I visited include the following:

  • Europe
    1. England
    2. France
    3. Spain
    4. Portugal
    5. Germany
    6. czechoslovakia (before the split)
    7. Germany
    8. Holland
    9. Belgium
  • Asia
    1. China
    2. Singapore
    3. Thailand
    4. Phillippines
    5. Hong Kong
    6. Korea
    7. Japan
    8. Melasia

My life-long goal is to visit each of the continents, and there's a whole lot of traveling before I meet that goal. I still haven't visited South America, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, and the Indian subcontinent.

The first step is getting south of the equator. So, I'm planning to visit Machu Picu sometime after graduating from GWU.

Work Experience

Upon returning to the States, I moved to Washington DC and found publishing work. My first couple of jobs (including stints with The Brookings Institute and The National Association of Home Builders) I worked as a general publications editor. However, I soon gravitated to acquisitions. I have worked as an acquistions editor for Home Builder Press, Aspen Publishers, and Sage Publications.

You can find my current resume here. Please let me know of any good jobs.

GWU

I am currently pursuing a masters degree in publishing at The George Washington University. I plan to use both my past experience and the knowledge I've gain through the GWU to find a job as Director of Publications for A non-profit professional association.
