My original plan was to look at ecommerce in great depth, with the possibility for setting up a dummy ecommerce site using Drupal. But my research keeps moving me in the direction of open source software. Ecommerce is only part of the story. Still, it would be nice to add more bells and whistles. For the last couple of weeks, my time has gone to collecting and writing the other content for the project. It is important that this site be not only a Drupal page. I want to look at open source in general, and open source CMS and ecommerce in specific. That's a tall order, but I'm happy with the organization. The skeleton is fairly modular so that content can be added over time. Regardless of what I end up submitting for this final project, this is only the beginning of this site. In reading about the various OP CMS applications, one reviewer discounted all but Drupal or Joomla for the hobbyist. I like this term because it can have two meaning: using web design skills to pursue a hobby (comic books, for instance) and then making web design itself a hobby. Both seem attractive to me right now. The reviewer went on to say that the other programs were less attractive to hobbyists because they required too much technical knowledge "out of the box." It looks like Joomla is much easier to start than Drupal--non-techies can download the basic program and begin work almost immediately; its simplicity is also a problem because Joomla becomes too limiting. Drupal, on the other hand, has a much steeper learning curve and requires a bit more knowledge about coding, but it becomes very powerful very quickly as you learn the basics. Also, Drupal has a strong user/designer community that seems eager to help new users through the rough patches.
