For weeks, I've been researching (or at least trying to research) e-commerce as it applies to publishers, particularly small and start-up publishers. The conventional wisdom is that publishing is a capital-intensive business. The up-front costs of producing, manufacturing, warehousing, promoting and shipping a publication is prohibitively high for everyone except the biggest publishers. The last few decades have seen significant consolidation in the industry. And with each new merger, the argument is the same: only through economies of scale can publishers remain profitable. I don't buy that argument. The advent of the Internet and all advances that have come with it have changed publishing forever. Manufacturing and warehousing? This aren't as crucial as they once were, as print on demand becomes more practical and economical. In fact, the cost of entry are lower than that. A person just needs to start blogging, and--presto--they are a publisher. Marketing and promotion? These are still essential, but the old methods of direct mail and perhaps even trade shows are giving way to more low-cost electronics methods. In fact, the Internet has changed publishing to the point that the market may actually favor the small and start-up publisher that is light on its feet. So, yeah, that's what I believe. But belief and developing a research project are completely different. The topic of e-commerce for publishers, even when limited by saying "for small publishers" is bewilderingly broad. While I've been trying to learn at least the basics of Drupual, I've also been collecting material off line. I'm still not sure how I'll present that material here, but at least I have a rudimentary site up and running. That's half the battle, isn't it?
